HP Natural Vitamin E<\/strong> by Health & Performance is a complementary feed for horses containing natural vitamin E, without added selenium. The product contains d-alpha-tocopherol, a natural form of vitamin E that is readily absorbed and utilized by horses.<\/p>\n

Vitamin E is an essential nutrient that helps protect cells against oxidative stress. It also plays an important role in maintaining normal muscle and nerve function.<\/p>\n

Horses obtain vitamin E primarily from fresh pasture. During the drying and storage of hay, vitamin E levels gradually decrease. Horses with limited or no access to fresh grass may therefore receive insufficient vitamin E through their diet.<\/p>\n

HP Natural Vitamin E contains no added selenium<\/strong>. This allows vitamin E to be supplemented separately without increasing the horse’s selenium intake.<\/p>\n

      Under veterinary supervision, vitamin E supplementation may form part of the management of certain neuromuscular conditions, including polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM), recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER), equine motor neuron disease (EMND), and equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (EDM).<\/p>\n

      This product is not a medication and does not treat these conditions on its own. The need for supplementation and the appropriate dosage should be determined according to the diagnosis, diet, and vitamin E status of the individual horse.<\/p>\n

        For certain muscle and neurological disorders,<\/strong> higher amounts of vitamin E may be recommended. The manufacturer lists 2\u20135 softgels daily for RER and PSSM, and 8\u201316 softgels daily for EMND, EDM, and equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM).<\/p>\n

        These higher dosages should only be used under the supervision of the attending veterinarian. They are not intended as routine maintenance dosages. In horses with EPM, vitamin E is supportive and does not replace appropriate treatment of the underlying infection.<\/p>\n

        The appropriate amount depends on the horse’s body weight, diet, and health status. In horses with confirmed vitamin E deficiency or neuromuscular disorders, measuring blood vitamin E concentrations and monitoring the response to supplementation are recommended.<\/p>\n

        HP Natural Vitamin E is supplied in a container with 210 softgels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        The duration of use depends on the daily dosage:<\/p>\n

          Scientific evidence<\/h2>\n

          Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that helps protect muscle and nerve tissue against oxidative damage. Research in horses has shown that natural vitamin E is generally more bioavailable than synthetic vitamin E.<\/p>\n

          In a study by Fagan et al. (2020), published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, researchers investigated the effects of natural and synthetic vitamin E supplementation in exercising horses.           Advice from the equine veterinarian<\/h2>\n

In horses already receiving sufficient selenium through their diet, this allows vitamin E intake to be increased without unnecessary additional selenium supplementation.<\/p>\n

          This is particularly relevant for horses with a confirmed vitamin E deficiency or certain muscle and neurological disorders for which higher vitamin E intakes are recommended. Selenium has a relatively narrow safety margin, and excessive intake can be harmful.<\/p>\n

          When vitamin E deficiency is suspected, I recommend measuring serum alpha-tocopherol concentrations. In horses with muscle-related symptoms, muscle enzymes such as CK and AST may also be evaluated. If a deficiency is confirmed, supplementation can be adjusted and the response monitored through repeated blood testing.<\/p>\n

          In horses with severe vitamin E deficiency or certain neurological disorders, a specially formulated, water-dispersible natural vitamin E product may be more appropriate for rapidly increasing blood concentrations. Not all vitamin E formulations are absorbed at the same rate.<\/p>\n
