Prequine Librium
Prequine Librium is a liquid complementary feed for horses and ponies, developed to provide nutritional support during stressful situations. It contains magnesium citrate, L-tryptophan, and several B vitamins.
Some horses are particularly sensitive to changes in their environment, transportation, competitions, or other unfamiliar situations. Librium is formulated as a nutritional supplement for horses that may benefit from additional support during these circumstances.
The product can be administered daily or for a short period before an anticipated stressful event. Librium is not a sedative medication and does not guarantee a reduction in anxiety or startle responses.
Properties and benefits
Prequine Librium combines several nutrients involved in the normal functioning of the nervous system and metabolism:
- Magnesium: an essential mineral that contributes to normal muscle and nerve function.
- L-tryptophan: an essential amino acid used, among other functions, in the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in behavioral regulation.
- Vitamin B6: plays a role in normal amino acid metabolism and the production of certain neurotransmitters.
- Vitamin B2 and niacinamide (vitamin B3): contribute to normal energy metabolism and various physiological processes.
- Vitamin C: contributes to antioxidant protection and helps protect cells against oxidative stress.
Although these nutrients have important physiological functions, additional supplementation does not necessarily make a horse calmer. Scientific evidence supporting the calming effects of these types of supplements in horses is limited, and individual responses may vary.
When to use Prequine Librium?
Prequine Librium is intended to provide additional nutritional support for horses that are sensitive to stress or changes in their environment, including:
- Before transportation or long journeys.
- During competitions, events, or other busy environments.
- When changes occur in the stable environment or daily routine.
- For horses that become easily tense during training.
- During situations in which a horse may temporarily benefit from additional nutritional support.
The supplement may be used as part of a broader management approach that emphasizes a predictable routine, appropriate housing, and calm, consistent training.
Horses showing pronounced anxiety, panic reactions, or sudden behavioral changes should be examined for possible underlying causes, including pain or physical discomfort.
Composition
Magnesium citrate, glycerin, propylene glycol, potassium sorbate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), niacinamide (vitamin B3), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), L-tryptophan, and citric acid.
The product also contains minerals, including magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus.
Directions for use and dosage
Shake the bottle well before use. Administer Librium directly into the horse’s mouth, optionally diluted with a small amount of water.
According to the manufacturer’s instructions, the following dosages apply to horses weighing approximately 500 kg (1,100 lb) or more:
- Horses in training: 5 mL once daily, potentially over an extended period.
- Before transportation or competition: 5 mL twice daily, starting 5 days before the event.
- For particularly anxious horses: two doses of 10 mL, administered 18 hours and 6 hours before the anticipated event, respectively.
- Ponies and foals: the manufacturer recommends half of the above amounts. For smaller or young animals, consult your veterinarian to determine an appropriate dosage.
Do not exceed the recommended amount. During prolonged supplementation, consider the complete diet and avoid unnecessary overlap with other supplements.
Store the bottle tightly closed in a dry, dark place at 15–25 °C (59–77 °F). Keep out of reach of children.
Packaging and duration of use
Prequine Librium is available in two bottle sizes:
- 200 mL bottle: sufficient for 40 days at 5 mL per day or 20 days at 10 mL per day.
- 1 L bottle: sufficient for 200 days at 5 mL per day or 100 days at 10 mL per day.
The actual duration of use depends on the horse’s body weight and the selected dosage.
Advice from the equine veterinarian
Stress and tension in horses can have many different causes. Some horses are naturally more sensitive to environmental stimuli, but restlessness may also result from pain, inadequate habituation, changes in housing, or an unsuitable training approach.
Prequine Librium contains nutrients involved in normal nervous system function. However, scientific evidence that additional magnesium or L-tryptophan supplementation effectively reduces anxiety and startle responses in horses remains limited. I therefore consider Librium a nutritional supplement rather than a substitute for appropriate behavioral management.
For horses experiencing transportation-related stress, I recommend focusing on gradual trailer-loading training, sufficient habituation, and a safe transportation environment. A predictable daily routine can also help reduce stress.
If a horse suddenly develops anxious behavior, becomes unusually reactive, or shows persistent signs of restlessness, I recommend ruling out potential physical causes before introducing a supplement.
For competition horses: always check the current antidoping regulations of the relevant equestrian organization and the manufacturer’s product information. A supplement marketed as suitable for sport horses does not provide an absolute guarantee against a positive doping test.
