Sorexil (formerly Flexi4)

A healthy musculoskeletal system is essential for a horse’s athletic performance, well-being, and freedom of movement. Sport horses undergoing intensive training and older horses are particularly exposed to increased joint stress. Alongside an appropriate training program, a balanced diet, and veterinary care, targeted nutritional support may be beneficial.

Sorexil (formerly Flexi4) is a complementary feed containing botanical extracts, developed to support normal joint function and maintain joint mobility in horses. Its liquid formulation combines four plant extracts: turmeric, yucca, white willow, and nettle.

Sorexil is particularly suitable for sport horses during periods of intensive training and competition. It may also be used in older horses requiring additional nutritional support for their musculoskeletal system.

Properties and benefits

Sorexil contains four botanical extracts traditionally used in products designed to support the musculoskeletal system:

  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa): contains curcuminoids, including curcumin. These compounds have been investigated for their antioxidant and inflammation-modulating properties. However, the oral bioavailability of curcumin depends on the formulation and is generally limited.
  • Yucca (Yucca schidigera): contains various bioactive compounds, including saponins and polyphenols. Although these botanical constituents possess different biological properties, their clinical effectiveness in horses with joint disorders has not been adequately demonstrated.
  • White willow (Salix alba): contains salicylate derivatives, including salicin. Willow bark extracts have traditionally been used because of their potential effects on pain and inflammatory processes. However, their efficacy and safety in horses remain insufficiently investigated.
  • Nettle (Urtica dioica): contains various botanical constituents, including polyphenols and minerals. Nettle has traditionally been included in products intended to support the musculoskeletal system.

The combination of these botanical extracts is designed to provide nutritional support for normal joint function and mobility. Although individual plant compounds have been investigated for their pharmacological properties, the clinical effectiveness of the complete Sorexil formulation in horses with joint disorders has not been sufficiently established.

Sorexil is not a veterinary medicinal product and does not replace appropriate treatment for osteoarthritis, lameness, or other musculoskeletal disorders.

Composition

Sorexil contains sugar and dried algae (spirulina).

The formulation also contains botanical extracts of turmeric (Curcuma longa), yucca (Yucca schidigera), white willow (Salix alba), and nettle (Urtica dioica).

These ingredients are combined in a palatable gel for oral administration.

Directions for use and dosage

Sorexil is administered orally once daily, either directly into the horse’s mouth or mixed into its regular feed.

Sport horses during competition periods:

  • 100 mL daily during the four days preceding the competition.
  • 100 mL on the day of the competition.
  • 100 mL daily during the five days following the competition.

Horses receiving management for joint problems:

  • Initial dosage: 100 mL daily for 10 days.
  • Maintenance dosage: 50 mL daily, repeated as necessary.

Older horses and ponies:

  • 50–100 mL daily, depending on individual requirements.

These dosages are based on the manufacturer’s current recommendations. The duration of supplementation may be adjusted according to the individual horse’s requirements and veterinary assessment.

In horses presenting with joint pain or lameness, the underlying cause should first be established. Supplementation should never delay necessary veterinary examinations or appropriate treatment.

Competition horses: because Sorexil contains white willow, which provides salicylate derivatives, its use should be assessed against the applicable medication and anti-doping regulations before administration during competition periods.

Packaging and duration of use

Sorexil is available in a 1 kg package.

  • 1 kg at 50 mL per day: estimated to last up to approximately 20 days.
  • 1 kg at 100 mL per day: estimated to last approximately 10 days.

These durations are approximate. The package contents are expressed by weight (kg), whereas the recommended dosage is expressed by volume (mL). The actual duration of use therefore depends on the density of the product.

A compatible dispensing pump is available separately for convenient and accurate administration.

Store Sorexil in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Close the container carefully after use.

Advice from the equine veterinarian

Joint health depends on several factors, including the horse’s age, training workload, hoof balance, body weight, and any underlying orthopedic conditions.

In sport horses, intensive training and repetitive loading can lead to changes in joints and surrounding tissues. A progressively structured training program, sufficient recovery periods, and appropriate workload management are essential for maintaining musculoskeletal health.

Sorexil contains botanical extracts with individual compounds that have been investigated for their potential effects on inflammatory processes and oxidative stress. However, it is important to distinguish between the pharmacological properties of individual plant compounds and the demonstrated clinical effects of a nutritional supplement.

There is currently insufficient independent clinical evidence to establish that Sorexil slows the progression of osteoarthritis, reduces joint pain, or improves athletic performance.

In horses with joint problems, additional nutritional support may be considered as part of a comprehensive management plan. Such supplementation should always be adapted to the underlying condition, training workload, and any concurrent treatments.

Because Sorexil contains white willow, caution is warranted when it is administered alongside anti-inflammatory medications. These combinations should be discussed with the attending veterinarian.

For competition horses, the presence of salicylate derivatives also makes it important to verify compliance with the relevant medication and anti-doping regulations before use.

When a horse exhibits stiffness, gait irregularities, reduced performance, or obvious lameness, a targeted orthopedic examination is recommended. Depending on the clinical findings, further diagnostic investigations, including ultrasonography or radiography, may be necessary.

A complementary feed may support nutritional management but cannot replace an accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, or an individually adapted training program.
