Twydil X
Twydil X is a complementary feed for horses, developed to support the respiratory system and pulmonary capillaries during physical exercise. The formulation combines plant-derived antioxidants with potassium and other nutrients and is particularly intended for sport horses undergoing intensive exercise.
During strenuous exercise, oxygen demand increases considerably, placing substantial demands on the lungs and pulmonary circulation. Twydil X is formulated to support the body’s natural antioxidant defenses and provide nutritional support during periods of increased physical exertion.
Properties and benefits
The Twydil X formulation contains several ingredients with specific nutritional functions:
- Plant-derived antioxidants: obtained from dried fruit and vegetable juices and blackcurrants. These provide various compounds, including polyphenols, that contribute to the antioxidant properties of the formulation.
- Potassium: an essential electrolyte involved in normal muscle function, nerve conduction, and fluid and electrolyte balance.
- Palatinose (isomaltulose): a carbohydrate that is digested and absorbed more gradually than conventional sugar.
- Garlic powder: contains naturally occurring sulfur compounds and provides an additional botanical component to the formulation.
According to the manufacturer, Twydil X supports the antioxidant defenses of the lungs and the condition of the pulmonary capillaries. The manufacturer also describes a natural drainage effect. However, the clinical significance of these effects in horses has not been adequately investigated in independent studies.
When to use Twydil X?
Twydil X may be considered under veterinary guidance:
- For sport horses regularly performing strenuous exercise.
- To support natural antioxidant defenses during training and competition.
- As additional nutritional support for horses experiencing increased respiratory demands.
- When nutritional supplementation forms part of an individualized veterinary management plan.
The manufacturer also recommends Twydil X for horses susceptible to exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). However, there is insufficient clinical evidence that Twydil X reduces the occurrence or severity of EIPH.
Composition
Dried fruit and vegetable juices, Palatinose (isomaltulose), potassium chloride, garlic powder, blackcurrant powder.
Directions for use and dosage
Recommended dosage: one 60 g sachet daily for a minimum of 10 days.
Mix the entire contents of one sachet into the horse’s daily concentrate feed. Ideally, begin supplementation at least 10 days before a period of intensive training or an important competition.
According to the manufacturer, initial effects may become noticeable after approximately 7 days, with optimal effects expected after approximately 10 days. However, these time frames have not been independently confirmed in clinical studies.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage. Due to its relatively high potassium content, veterinary advice is recommended before use in horses with conditions affecting potassium balance.
According to the manufacturer, Twydil X can be combined with other supplements, such as Twydil Omegadil. When combining supplements, consider the total dietary intake of nutrients and electrolytes.
Packaging and duration of use
Twydil X is available in a box containing 10 sachets of 60 g, with a total weight of 600 g.
At the recommended dosage of one sachet daily, one package provides 10 days of supplementation.
Store in the original packaging in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Advice from the equine veterinarian
During strenuous exercise, the lungs of sport horses are subjected to considerable mechanical and metabolic stress. Particularly during high-intensity exercise, elevated pulmonary capillary pressures may contribute to the development of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH).
Although antioxidants play an important role in protecting cells against oxidative stress, this does not necessarily mean that additional dietary antioxidants improve pulmonary function or prevent lung bleeding. Convincing independent clinical research demonstrating such effects for Twydil X is currently lacking.
In horses presenting with reduced performance, respiratory symptoms, or suspected EIPH, I recommend investigating the underlying cause. Post-exercise endoscopy and, depending on the clinical findings, bronchoalveolar lavage may provide valuable diagnostic information.
Twydil X may be considered as additional nutritional support but does not replace targeted veterinary treatment. In horses with inflammatory airway diseases, reducing exposure to dust and fungal spores remains an essential part of management.
