HP Resistance (formerly Bonpard Resistance)
HP Resistance by Health & Performance is a complementary feed for horses, specially developed to support the immune system and natural immune defenses. It contains a combination of omega-3 fatty acids from algae, beta-1,3/1,6-glucans from yeast cell walls, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements.
HP Resistance was previously known as Bonpard Resistance. Following the transition from Bonpard to Health & Performance, the brand name and packaging changed, while the original formulation was retained.
A healthy immune system is essential for every horse. Factors such as stress, intensive training, illness, an unbalanced diet, and changes in the intestinal microbiome can influence normal immune function.
HP Resistance has been developed to provide targeted nutritional support for the immune system. The formula contains DHA Gold®, an algae-derived source of the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, and MacroGard®, a natural source of beta-glucans from yeast cell walls. These ingredients are combined with specific nutrients that contribute to normal immune function.
The supplement is supplied as convenient pellets that can easily be mixed with the horse’s regular feed.
Properties and benefits
HP Resistance combines several nutrients that contribute to the normal functioning and regulation of the immune system.
- MacroGard® with beta-1,3/1,6-glucans: these natural components from the cell walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are recognized by specific receptors of the innate immune system. They are particularly interesting for their role in supporting a balanced immune response.
- DHA Gold® from algae: provides docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a long-chain omega-3 fatty acid. DHA is an important component of cell membranes and plays a role in regulating inflammatory processes.
- Vitamin E and vitamin C: contribute to antioxidant protection and support normal immune function.
- Zinc and copper: are involved in various enzymatic processes, normal skin function, and immune system activity.
- Selenium and manganese: play important roles in antioxidant defense mechanisms and normal metabolism.
- B vitamins: support various metabolic processes that are important for overall health and well-being.
- Targeted nutritional support: the combination of essential fatty acids, vitamins, and trace elements provides additional support for horses with increased nutritional needs.
An important feature of HP Resistance is that it provides DHA directly from algae. This distinguishes it from flaxseed-based supplements, which mainly contain the plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
When to use HP Resistance?
HP Resistance is particularly suitable for horses that may benefit from additional support for their natural immune defenses, including:
- Horses that frequently experience health problems or are particularly susceptible to infections.
- Horses recovering from illness or a period of reduced physical condition.
- Horses exposed to stress during transportation, competitions, or changes in their living environment.
- Horses with recurring skin problems, such as pastern dermatitis (mud fever), itching, or skin bumps.
- Horses with allergic skin conditions, including sweet itch, where supporting skin health and balanced immune function is desirable.
- Horses whose diet or intestinal microbiome may benefit from additional nutritional support.
HP Resistance is intended to provide nutritional support for the immune system. It can be used alongside appropriate management and veterinary treatment in horses experiencing recurring health problems.
Because the intestinal microbiome and immune system are closely connected, the manufacturer recommends combining HP Resistance, when appropriate, with high-quality forage and HP Colon, a complementary feed developed specifically to support intestinal function.
Composition
Alfalfa, yeast-derived beta-glucans (MacroGard®), dried algae (DHA Gold®), yeast extract, molasses, and sunflower oil.
Added nutrients include vitamin E, vitamin C, several B vitamins, biotin, vitamin K, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, and iodine.
The main functional ingredients are DHA Gold®, which provides the omega-3 fatty acid DHA from algae, and MacroGard®, which contains beta-1,3/1,6-glucans derived from yeast cell walls.
Directions for use and dosage
HP Resistance is mixed with the horse’s regular feed each day. Because the algae-derived omega-3 fatty acids have a distinctive taste, the manufacturer recommends introducing the product gradually.
Dosage according to the manufacturer:
- Adult horses: 100 g daily (2 measuring scoops).
- Ponies and smaller horses weighing up to approximately 400–450 kg (880–990 lb): 50 g daily (1 measuring scoop).
One level measuring scoop contains approximately 50 g.
Gradual introduction:
Start with approximately one teaspoon of HP Resistance daily, mixed with the regular feed. Gradually increase the amount over several days until the recommended daily dosage is reached.
Introducing the supplement gradually gives the horse time to become accustomed to its characteristic taste and smell.
The dosage can be adjusted according to the horse’s body weight, existing diet, and individual nutritional requirements.
HP Resistance contains several vitamins and trace elements, including selenium. It is therefore important to consider the total intake of these nutrients from concentrate feed, vitamin and mineral balancers, and other supplements.
Packaging and duration of use
HP Resistance is supplied in a 3 kg package, including a measuring scoop.
The duration of use depends on the daily dosage:
- 50 g daily (1 measuring scoop): approximately 60 days.
- 100 g daily (2 measuring scoops): approximately 30 days.
According to the manufacturer, HP Resistance has a maximum shelf life of 12 months from the manufacturing date. Always check the expiration date printed on the packaging, particularly when planning to use the supplement over an extended period.
Store the product tightly closed in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently asked questions about HP Resistance
Is HP Resistance the same as Bonpard Resistance?
Yes. HP Resistance was previously sold under the name Bonpard Resistance. Bonpard transitioned to the Health & Performance brand. According to the manufacturer, the product’s formulation remained unchanged during this rebranding.
Can HP Resistance be used daily?
Yes. HP Resistance is designed for daily nutritional support. The recommended amount is 100 g daily for adult horses and 50 g daily for ponies and smaller horses.
What is the difference between HP Resistance and HP Colon?
HP Resistance focuses on supporting the immune system through omega-3 fatty acids, beta-glucans, vitamins, and trace elements. HP Colon is developed to support intestinal function and the intestinal microbiome. Both products can complement each other as part of an appropriate feeding program.
Is HP Resistance suitable for horses with skin problems?
HP Resistance can be used as additional nutritional support for horses experiencing recurring skin problems or allergic conditions. Healthy skin depends in part on normal immune function, sufficient essential fatty acids, and a balanced diet.
Advice from the equine veterinarian
A healthy immune system is essential for a horse’s overall health and well-being. Targeted nutritional support can be particularly useful for horses regularly exposed to stress, undergoing intensive training, or experiencing recurring health problems.
I consider HP Resistance a particularly interesting supplement because it combines two specific ingredients: DHA Gold® and MacroGard®.
DHA Gold® provides DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid derived directly from algae. DHA plays an important role in cell membrane structure and the regulation of inflammatory processes. MacroGard® contains beta-1,3/1,6-glucans from yeast cell walls. These components interact with the innate immune system and are particularly interesting for their immunomodulatory properties.
The combination with vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, selenium, and other nutrients makes HP Resistance a comprehensive supplement for horses that may benefit from additional support for their natural immune defenses.
I particularly recommend HP Resistance for horses experiencing recurring health problems, during recovery from illness, or for horses that are sensitive to stress and changes in their environment. For horses with skin problems, such as pastern dermatitis or allergic skin reactions, supporting normal immune function can also be a useful part of a broader management approach.
A healthy intestinal microbiome is equally important. Much of the interaction between the immune system and the external environment takes place in the gastrointestinal tract. For this reason, I recommend paying close attention to forage quality and intestinal function alongside HP Resistance. Combining it with HP Colon may provide additional nutritional support in certain situations.
I advise introducing HP Resistance gradually, starting with a small amount. Because the algae-derived omega-3 fatty acids have a distinctive taste, horses generally accept the supplement more readily when the daily amount is increased gradually.
For horses experiencing frequent infections, persistent skin problems, or other ongoing health concerns, I also recommend investigating the underlying cause. This allows nutritional support to be tailored more precisely to the individual horse’s needs.
I consider HP Resistance a valuable nutritional supplement for horses that need additional support for their natural immune defenses, particularly when combined with a suitable diet and appropriate management.
