Hyalusol

Hyalusol is a liquid solution containing hyaluronic acid and eucalyptus essential oil, developed for nebulization in horses, for example with the Flexineb nebulizer. The formulation combines hyaluronic acid of three different molecular weights in an isotonic solution and is intended to support the respiratory mucous membranes.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in various tissues throughout the body, including the respiratory mucosa. Due to its ability to bind water, hyaluronic acid plays an important role in tissue hydration and the properties of the extracellular matrix.

Properties and benefits

Hyalusol contains a combination of hyaluronic acid molecules of three different molecular weights, supplemented with eucalyptus essential oil.

The main characteristics of the formulation include:

  • Hyaluronic acid: a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan with a high water-binding capacity, involved in tissue hydration and structural integrity.
  • Different molecular weights: the combination of three molecular weights is a distinctive feature of the Hyalusol formulation.
  • Eucalyptus essential oil: contains aromatic compounds traditionally used to support respiratory comfort.
  • Isotonic solution: the liquid formulation is developed for administration through nebulization.

Hyalusol is used as an adjunct to support respiratory health, particularly the respiratory mucous membranes. Although hyaluronic acid plays an important physiological role in the respiratory tract, the clinical efficacy of nebulized Hyalusol in horses has not yet been adequately investigated.

When to use Hyalusol?

Hyalusol may be considered under veterinary guidance:

  • To support the respiratory mucous membranes.
  • In horses regularly exposed to dust and other environmental irritants.
  • As additional support in horses with recurrent respiratory problems.
  • When respiratory support through nebulization is part of an individualized veterinary management plan.

Hyalusol does not replace targeted treatment of equine asthma, respiratory infections, or other respiratory diseases.

Composition

Hyaluronic acid, eucalyptus essential oil, isotonic solution.

Directions for use and dosage

Hyalusol is developed for administration using a suitable equine nebulizer, such as the Flexineb.

Veterinary practice recommendation: one 8 mL ampoule once daily for 10 days.

Use the entire contents of one ampoule per nebulization session. Always follow the attending veterinarian’s individual recommendations regarding dosage, administration frequency, and duration of use.

The ampoules are intended for single use. Use immediately after opening and do not store any remaining solution for subsequent treatments.

Hyalusol is intended for nebulization only and should not be administered orally.

Use a clean nebulizer and do not mix Hyalusol with other solutions or medications in the same nebulizer chamber without prior veterinary advice.

As the formulation contains eucalyptus essential oil, caution is advised in horses with sensitive or inflamed airways. Discontinue administration if increased coughing, breathing difficulties, or other adverse reactions occur.

Packaging and duration of use

Hyalusol is available in a box containing 10 ampoules of 8 mL, providing a total volume of 80 mL.

At the recommended dosage of one ampoule daily, one package provides 10 days of use (10 nebulization sessions).

Store according to the instructions on the packaging, at room temperature and protected from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.

Advice from the equine veterinarian

The respiratory mucous membranes form an important protective barrier against inhaled particles, microorganisms, and other irritants. Hyaluronic acid naturally contributes to the structure and hydration of these tissues.

Scientific research in horses has demonstrated an association between hyaluronic acid concentrations in airway surface fluid and neutrophilic airway inflammation. This supports the physiological involvement of hyaluronic acid in respiratory processes but does not demonstrate that administering additional hyaluronic acid through nebulization improves clinical symptoms.

Hyalusol may be considered as an adjunct to support respiratory health. However, the clinical efficacy and safety of this specific formulation in horses have not yet been adequately investigated.

In horses with chronic or recurrent respiratory problems, I recommend identifying the underlying cause before initiating treatment. Depending on the clinical findings, respiratory endoscopy, tracheal wash, or bronchoalveolar lavage may be indicated.

Reducing exposure to dust and fungal spores from forage and bedding is also essential, particularly in horses with asthma.

When using Hyalusol alongside other nebulized products, such as SilvaPlex, I recommend administering them in separate nebulization sessions. Do not mix these products without prior veterinary advice.
