Inhal

Inhal is a liquid formulation containing eucalyptus and cypress extracts, specifically developed for nebulization in horses, for example the Flexineb nebulizer. The product is intended to support respiratory health, particularly in horses sensitive to dust, allergens, and other airborne irritants in their environment.

Inhal is used as an adjunct to support respiratory health in horses experiencing airway irritation and increased mucus production. Nebulization allows its components to come into contact with the respiratory tract through inhalation.

Properties and benefits

Inhal contains eucalyptus and cypress extracts. These botanical ingredients contain aromatic compounds traditionally used to support respiratory comfort.

According to the product information, Inhal is intended to support respiratory function and promote mucus clearance. However, its specific mucolytic properties and clinical efficacy in horses have not been adequately investigated.

Inhal may be considered under veterinary guidance for horses with:

  • Airway irritation caused by dust from hay, bedding, or the stable environment.
  • Recurrent coughing where environmental factors may play a contributing role.
  • Increased mucus production in the respiratory tract.
  • A need for additional respiratory support through nebulization.

The product does not replace targeted treatment of equine asthma, allergic airway diseases, or other respiratory conditions requiring appropriate veterinary therapy.

Composition

Eucalyptus extract, cypress extract.

Directions for use and dosage

Inhal is intended for administration using a suitable equine nebulizer.

Initial treatment: 2.5 mL per nebulization session, twice daily, for 20 days.

Maintenance: 2.5 mL once daily, depending on the individual situation and the attending veterinarian’s recommendations.

Shake the bottle well before use.

To facilitate nebulization, we recommend diluting Inhal with physiological saline solution (0.9% NaCl) at a minimum ratio of 1:1. For example, mix 2.5 mL of Inhal with 2.5 mL of physiological saline solution, providing a total volume of 5 mL per nebulization session.

Ensure that the formulation is compatible with the nebulizer being used. Always follow the attending veterinarian’s individual recommendations regarding dosage, administration frequency, and duration of use.

Botanical extracts and essential oils may cause respiratory irritation in sensitive horses. Discontinue administration if increased coughing, breathing difficulties, or other adverse reactions occur.

Packaging and duration of use

Inhal is available in a 100 mL bottle.

  • Initial treatment: at 2.5 mL twice daily, one bottle provides 20 days of use (40 nebulization sessions).
  • Maintenance: at 2.5 mL once daily, one bottle provides 40 days of use.

Adding physiological saline solution does not change the amount of Inhal administered per session.

Store in a cool, dry place and close the bottle tightly after use. Keep out of reach of children.

Advice from the equine veterinarian

Environmental factors play an important role in horses with allergic or inflammatory airway conditions. Dust and other airborne particles from forage, bedding, and the stable environment can contribute to airway inflammation and increased mucus production.

Reducing exposure to these particles is therefore an essential part of respiratory management. Measures include providing low-dust forage, appropriate bedding, adequate ventilation, and, whenever possible, increasing time spent outdoors.

Inhal may be considered as an adjunct to support respiratory health through nebulization. However, the clinical efficacy and safety of this specific formulation have not been adequately investigated. I therefore recommend caution in horses with sensitive or inflamed airways.

In horses presenting with persistent coughing, nasal discharge, abnormal breathing, or reduced performance, identifying the underlying cause is essential. Depending on the clinical findings, respiratory endoscopy, tracheal wash, or bronchoalveolar lavage may be indicated.

For horses with asthma, environmental management and, when necessary, targeted medical treatment remain the cornerstones of therapy. Inhal should not be considered a proven alternative to these treatments.

When using Inhal alongside other nebulized products, such as SilvaPlex, it is recommended to administer them in separate nebulization sessions. Do not mix these products in the same nebulizer chamber without prior veterinary advice.
