Twydil Omegadil

Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in the structure and function of cell membranes. In sport horses, these fatty acids are particularly interesting because of their potential influence on the properties of red blood cells and the physiological processes associated with intensive exercise. Adequate antioxidant intake is also important for protecting cells against oxidative stress.

Twydil Omegadil is a liquid complementary feed specifically developed to provide nutritional support for sport horses. Its formula combines omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, with a high concentration of vitamin E, L-arginine, L-carnitine, copper, and botanical ingredients.

Omegadil is particularly suitable for horses undergoing intensive training, participating in competitions, or preparing for prolonged exercise, such as endurance events. The product is designed to support normal cell membrane function, antioxidant status, and the physiological adaptations associated with physical exercise.

Properties and benefits

Twydil Omegadil contains several complementary ingredients that provide nutritional support for sport horses:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA): are polyunsaturated fatty acids that can be incorporated into cell membranes, including those of red blood cells. They may therefore influence the fatty acid composition and physical properties of these membranes.
  • Vitamin E: is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes against oxidative damage. The formula provides approximately 3,000 mg of vitamin E per daily dose of 60 mL.
  • L-arginine: is an amino acid that serves, among other functions, as a substrate for nitric oxide (NO) production. Nitric oxide is involved in the regulation of vascular tone. However, a clinically relevant effect of arginine supplementation on blood circulation in sport horses has not been demonstrated.
  • L-carnitine: plays a role in transporting long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria, where they can be used for energy production. A performance-enhancing effect of L-carnitine supplementation in horses has not been convincingly demonstrated.
  • Copper: is an essential trace element involved in several antioxidant enzymes and the normal formation and function of connective tissue.
  • Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): contains various botanical compounds, including glycyrrhizic acid. These substances possess different biological properties, but their clinical significance within this formulation has not been sufficiently investigated in horses.

The omega-3 fatty acids in Omegadil are combined with antioxidants to support their stability and provide nutritional support for cell membranes. The packaging is also designed to minimize oxygen exposure and help prevent oxidation of the fatty acids during storage.

Research in sport horses has demonstrated that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can modify the fatty acid composition of red blood cell membranes. Certain studies have also identified changes in membrane fluidity during exercise. These findings are physiologically relevant but do not establish that Omegadil improves athletic performance or prevents specific diseases.

Composition

Twydil Omegadil contains refined fatty acids, licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), and magnesium sulfate. The formula provides omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, and is supplemented with vitamin E, L-arginine, L-carnitine, and copper.

The formula also contains technological additives to support product stability.

Directions for use and dosage

Twydil Omegadil is administered orally by mixing the liquid into the horse’s daily feed.

  • Adult horses: 60 mL per day.
  • Recommended minimum administration period: 3 weeks.

For longer-term supplementation programs, such as preparation for an endurance competition, an administration period of 4 to 6 weeks or longer may be considered, depending on the individual horse’s requirements and training program.

Research investigating omega-3 supplementation in horses has demonstrated that changes in the fatty acid composition of red blood cell membranes can be detected after approximately 3 to 4 weeks. However, this does not mean that supplementation automatically improves athletic performance after this period.

Because Omegadil provides relatively high amounts of vitamin E and copper, the total daily intake of these nutrients should be considered when the horse receives additional vitamin or mineral supplements.

Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage.

Packaging and duration of use

Twydil Omegadil is available in a 2-liter package.

  • 2 liters: sufficient for approximately 33 days at the recommended daily dosage of 60 mL.

The product uses protective multilayer packaging designed to minimize contact between the oil and oxygen. This helps reduce oxidation of the unsaturated fatty acids during storage.

Store the product according to the instructions on the packaging and avoid temperatures below 5°C.

Advice from the equine veterinarian

Nutritional support for sport horses should always be adapted to the individual training workload, basal diet, and overall health of the horse. Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly interesting because of their role in cell membrane structure and various physiological processes.

Scientific research in horses has investigated how supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants affects the properties of red blood cells. In a placebo-controlled study involving twelve eventing horses, supplementation resulted in changes in the fatty acid composition of erythrocyte membranes. Differences in exercise-associated changes in membrane fluidity were also observed.

These findings suggest that omega-3 fatty acids may influence the physiological properties of cell membranes during exercise. However, it is important to distinguish between measurable biological effects and actual improvements in athletic performance.

Vitamin E is another important component of Omegadil. This antioxidant helps protect unsaturated fatty acids within cell membranes against oxidative damage. As the product provides approximately 3,000 mg of vitamin E per daily dose, the contribution from the basal diet and any additional supplements should be considered.

Although the manufacturer also positions Omegadil as nutritional support for microcirculation, there is insufficient clinical evidence that the product prevents or treats cardiac arrhythmias, exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), or other cardiovascular and respiratory disorders.

Sport horses presenting with unexplained poor performance, abnormal recovery after exercise, cardiac arrhythmias, or clinical signs suggestive of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage should undergo appropriate veterinary investigation. Depending on the clinical findings, diagnostic procedures may include exercise testing, electrocardiography, and respiratory endoscopy.

Twydil Omegadil may complement a balanced diet but does not replace appropriate training management, adequate nutritional intake, or targeted veterinary investigations in horses with performance-related problems.
