Digestive supplements for horses
Healthy digestion is essential for the well-being, physical condition, and athletic performance of horses. The gastrointestinal tract plays a central role in digesting nutrients, absorbing energy, and maintaining normal physiological functions.
Horses are naturally adapted to consuming small amounts of fiber-rich forage throughout the day. Factors such as intensive training, transportation, stress, dietary changes, and insufficient forage intake can affect normal digestive function.
Gastric and intestinal health therefore deserve particular attention in performance horses. Appropriate nutritional management provides the foundation, while targeted supplements may offer additional nutritional support.
Our selection includes products supporting the gastric mucosa, intestinal microbiota, normal manure consistency, intestinal transit, and the removal of sand from the digestive tract.
Which digestive supplement is right for your horse?
The choice of digestive supplement depends on your horse’s individual needs. Products designed for gastric support serve a different purpose from those targeting intestinal microbiota or normal intestinal transit.
Gastric health and support for the stomach lining
A complementary feed developed to provide nutritional support for the equine stomach. Its formula combines Pectigard Complex® (pectin and lecithin), magnesium hydroxide, sea buckthorn berries, and live yeast cultures. These ingredients are used to support the stomach lining, buffer gastric contents, and promote normal digestive function. Particularly suitable for performance horses that may benefit from additional gastric support during training, competitions, or transportation.
A mineral-based supplement containing calcareous marine algae, pectin, lecithin, and live yeast cultures. The formula combines ingredients with acid-buffering properties and nutrients that support normal gastric and intestinal function. Particularly interesting for horses with sensitive stomachs and those regularly exposed to changes in feeding or training routines.
Intestinal microbiota and normal manure consistency
A supplement combining live probiotic yeast cultures, prebiotic fibers, and selected botanical ingredients. Developed to support a balanced intestinal microbiota and normal fiber digestion. Particularly useful during dietary changes, intensive competition periods, or when additional nutritional support for normal digestive function is desirable.
A complementary feed combining prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotic components. Its formula contains chicory root, live and inactivated yeast cultures, and selected vitamins. HP Intestovet has been developed to support intestinal microbiota, normal digestive function, and healthy manure consistency. Particularly suitable during changes in feed and other periods when digestive health requires additional attention.
HP Colon (formerly Bonpard Colon)
A specially formulated, fiber-rich dietary feed containing selected plant-based fiber sources and live yeast cultures. Developed to support microbial fermentation and normal digestion in the cecum and large intestine. HP Colon is particularly interesting as part of an adapted feeding program for horses experiencing chronic digestive problems affecting the large intestine, recurring free fecal water, or poorly digested manure.
Intestinal transit and support for sand removal
HP Motility (formerly Bonpard Motility)
A specially formulated dietary feed containing selected fiber sources, highly digestible ingredients, and live yeast cultures. Developed to support normal intestinal function and the passage of intestinal contents. Particularly suitable as part of an adapted feeding program for horses susceptible to hard manure, slow intestinal transit, or recurrent intestinal impactions.
A complementary feed containing 100% whole black psyllium seeds (Plantago afra). When exposed to water, the seeds release a gel-like mucilage that can help carry sand through the intestinal contents. The product is used to support the natural removal of ingested sand. Particularly interesting for horses kept in sandy paddocks, sparse pastures, or environments where accidental sand ingestion is common.
Additional support for intestinal function
A product containing di-tri-octahedral smectite, a natural clay mineral with adsorbent properties. Bio-Sponge is used to support gastrointestinal function and normal manure consistency in foals and adult horses. Due to its adsorbent properties, it is particularly relevant as additional support during certain intestinal disturbances, under veterinary guidance.
The importance of gastric health and balanced intestinal microbiota
A horse’s stomach continuously produces gastric acid, even when the horse is not eating. Sufficient forage intake stimulates saliva production and helps buffer gastric contents. Prolonged periods without feed, intensive exercise, and management changes can negatively affect gastric health.
The intestinal microbiota also plays an essential role in digestion. In the cecum and large intestine, microorganisms ferment dietary fiber from forage. This process produces volatile fatty acids, which provide an important source of energy for the horse.
Gradual transitions between feeds, sufficient high-quality forage, and appropriate feeding management are therefore essential for healthy digestion.
Supplements containing live yeast cultures and prebiotic dietary fibers may provide nutritional support for normal microbial activity. Products with specific fiber compositions can also be useful when intestinal transit or manure consistency requires additional attention.
Advice from the equine veterinarian
As a veterinarian specializing in equine sports medicine, I regularly examine horses in which gastric or intestinal problems contribute to reduced physical condition, behavioral changes, or poor athletic performance.
My primary recommendation is to start with appropriate feeding management. Provide sufficient high-quality forage, avoid prolonged periods without feed, and introduce dietary changes gradually. For performance horses, particular attention should be paid to feeding schedules around training and competitions and the amount of concentrate feed provided.
Choose supplements according to your horse’s specific needs. Products designed for gastric support, intestinal microbiota, intestinal transit, and sand removal are not interchangeable.
Horses experiencing recurrent colic, persistent diarrhea, or unexplained weight loss require veterinary examination. When gastric ulcers are suspected, I recommend gastroscopy to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment. Acute signs of colic require prompt veterinary assessment.
